Artist Statement

My work is a documentation of the dreams, hope and love of people living today, and is like a letter without reply, that I write every day. You and I, the feeling of love, times of dreaming, and the desire to become a better person than before serve as inspiration for my works. I want to be someone who guards people’s dreams, love and hope. I long for a scene in which many vulnerable and weak people become the light and love for one another. Such a world, where people can be together, is ultimately the art that I want to achieve. The world does not follow art. Art is merely something small that is behind the world.

Sentiments of the Times, Love and Frustration of the American Drama Generation

Kho, Chunghwan, Art Critic

Our lives are as remarkable as others’, and the lives of others are as insignificant as ours. (From The Joke that I Want to Live by Hur Ji-woong)

What is so precious that I won’t exchange it for anything is not some special day but an ordinary day... If there is someone willing to stand in the rain with me, then I would wait for the rain. (Artist’s note)

I will be the protector of your dreams. John, dressed up in a tuxedo exclaims with a blush on his face and a ring in his hand. Though his face is smiling, his hands are trembling. I will be your hope. Amy answers shyly. As if their blushes and shy hearts were discovered by one another, the background of the picture burns up in a shade of red, and stars sparkle as if to give their blessing to a sacred engagement ceremony of a young couple. Or perhaps it seems as if firecrackers went off in the air stained with red. And Mimi the cat, sitting on John’s shoulder serves as the witness of this historical scene.

Blonde speaks above Dennis’s hand, which is puffed up like a balloon. I wish you become someone as wide as the universe, someone who sparkles like the stars. And Dennis gives a loving gaze at her. Dennis actually embraces the universe in his heart. You may call it a dream. In his dream, Dennis often uses the moon as a tiny boat to navigate the cosmic ocean, and when he is not dreaming he plays with the moon, dropping it in a tub of water.

Meanwhile, Kevin’s heart trembles as he thinks of Linda waiting for him at the cabin on the meadow.  He waves his hand unknowingly in sadness when he is going away from home, and in joy when he is approaching it. Though only the cabin on the meadow is visible in the picture, Linda must also be waving her hand inside the house. And Albert divulges stories, words, language, text, truths—that is self-expression—from his eyes, though it is unclear whether they are tears or glittering of the eyes. Could we say he is speaking with his eyes? And Eric remains frustrated in his private space—the bathroom.

Hollywood kids. Though it is a term made famous by An Jeong-hyo’s novel and a film directed by Jeong Ji-young, it implies a cross-section of the cultural customs of the old generations. In the days there was not much to do for pleasure, people killed time at the movie theaters. At the time many of the theaters showed double features, and people would buy cheap, poor quality snacks for meals at the in-theater shop, and even sleep there. Sometimes men and women who were total strangers would fall in love.

I used to imitate how Clint Eastwood, who in real life did not smoke, bit on a cigar and rolled it with his teeth to the other side of his mouth in the movie, and tried to record the music and dialogue from movies using a portable turntable with a recording function, quite amateur when I think about it now. While I could almost memorize key scenes from Clint Eastwood’s film Jjanggo and Play Misty for Me, Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon, after watching them so many times, I can only recall the memory of sleeping during the film Sacred Hero Yi Sun-Shin, which was part of a school field trip. In retrospect, it was a time we spent our youth together with the pictures flickering with noise as if rain was flowing down the screen, and an era that comforted our frustration and wandering.

Time flowed and the ways of the world changed. Now the era of cinema has gone, and the era of Internet has come. Film is still strong of course, but what has changed is that the stage has moved from the theater to the living room. Now people are crazy about Netflix and American Dramas. Blonde John and blue-eyed Amy used to live only in the movies, but now they are like friendly neighbors living their daily lives outside the movie. The environment for creation in the literature sector has also changed, as in the case of Internet novels and web novels. Though Internet or web novels are concepts based on the channel through which the commodity called literature is consumed, at the same time, they also signify a changed creative environment.

One noteworthy example is the case of creating a novel only by processing information collected through the Internet. Google Maps can be used to access the streets, stores and the daily lives of people living anywhere in the world in real time, and writers use this collected information to create their novels. Since the street names and company names are all in English, and the main characters also have English names, other than the fact that the author is Korean, it would appear as if these were novels from England or America. Since it is not the reality I live in, it cannot be called reality, and even though it is based on collection, since it was clearly made by processing the reality, it cannot be called non-reality either. Perhaps we should call it literature on the border. Hence, the contemporary human, mediated by the Internet, lives in an era where direct experience and indirect experience, virtual reality and sensuous reality break through one-another’s boundary and become mixed as one.

It is the same with painting. For the contemporary artists, who are digital warriors each holding the world, and tools capable of manipulating that world in their hands, comics, animation, illustration, Photoshop, web toons, cartoons, Youtube, apps, social networking services, and recently, metaverse and NFTs, serve as the norms and criteria of contemporary art in the true sense. In the view of art history (though in fact this now appears classical) what provided such contents were Pop art, neo-pop, junk art, combine art, graffiti, urban art, art of the streets and political art, from which distinguished artists emerged, traversing the boundaries of creation and the everyday, thus changing the contemporary art scene. Moreover, as the Internet transformed the creative environment of images and their methods of consumption, appropriated, edited and re-composed images universally took the place of originality.

With some exaggeration, it could be called art of an age that asks no questions about source or identity. This age after Post-Modernism, the age of hybridity, could perhaps be called hybrid of the hybrid, and therefore art of the post-post era. Or perhaps we could call it art of an age where it is not strange at all to say that I am John and Amy at the same time, and you are Blonde and Dennis at the same time. Artist Kim Je-eon’s attitude toward creation is such, and so is his painting. When it comes to reality, sensuous reality and virtual reality have no difference in value to him, and as for sources that helped form his identity, indirect experience is as meaningful as direct experience. Hence the artist painted the dreams, hope, desires and frustrations of young men and women—contemporary people—sharing and empathizing with the subjects living in the era of crossing borders and hybridity.

In the old days, poets carried notebooks. This was to capture the floating fragments of thoughts and drifting words of poetry. Now the cell phone has replaced the notebook. Likewise, artists carried sketch books, which are replaced by cell phones and tablet computers. Now anyone can draw with a cell phone or tablet PC, and produce these images as artworks in the form of limited edition prints, applying the edition concept of printmaking. However, this method is not yet universally accepted, and such tools are used more widely as making preliminary drafts, similar to sketch books of the past.

Kim also tends to draw his pictures first on a computer, before painting the images on the canvas. As you know, pictures drawn on the computer show colors brighter than in reality because of the subtle light emitting from the luminous material used in the screen. This is suitable for rough sketches rather than detailed pictures, though there are exceptions. Considering that Kim’s paintings are bright, use primary colors, and capture the physical characteristics of the subject matter, such properties of digital drawing can tell us where the artist’s images come from. Of course it depends on how the artist’s position on painting should change in the future, but I suppose we can expect more delicate portrayals with more details in the days to come.

Hence, the artist painted pictures with fancy colors and unhindered brushwork, mixed identity (perhaps painful, or sometimes enjoyable) expressed on the simplest picture compositions, image and text combined on a single picture-plane breaking down boundaries, and thus extending narratives. He painted the dreams, hope and frustration of the cell phone and tablet PC generation, who have been baptized by the age of media and digital environment. He painted emotions of the generations connecting the Hollywood kids with the American Drama manias.
