Artist Statement

The theme that penetrates many series of my works is the ‘expression of my will to be free through immersion’. The immersion enables me to dominate the canvas with infinite imagination. When I was exhausted by engineering figures filling my whole head in my early days, something offered its hand to me in the last place, which was my old dream to become a painter. The dream has come true now. The meticulous engineering disposition in the past has been changed into persistent concentration on arts, and the results of the immersion have been fully represented as works.

The canvas looks like filled with machine parts interlocked with each other. If you take a close look, however, you can see that the marginal space is regarded as more important than entities. In other words, it means that the freedom is always in the order, and it also includes rules inside. The representation of order and rules, and space and freedom is reflecting my thoughts about life as a painter.

I want to be remembered as an artist who is always proactive for changes without settling down in the same spot. If my works in the early stage are compared with the current works, it might be difficult to guess that they have been drawn by the same artist. However, the middle process shows that they have been changed just like a word association game. The narrative including humans’ entangled relations and our history in the base part of those works, becomes the matrix of works, so it is in the same context with humans’ nature that does not change despite the ever-changing external transformation.

이번 전시에서는 ‘Simulacre’와 ‘Fractal’ 시리즈가 주를 이루고, ‘Cloud’, ‘Coherence’, ‘Bronze Mirror’ ‘Gate of Time’ 등이 나왔다.

작품 [Simulacre(201804)]와 [Simulacre(181804)]에서 경계를 흐리게 하는 것은 마치 짙은 안개나 구름이 낀 듯한 우주이다.

작품 [Simulacre(041708)]은 그러한 힘이 전체를 장악한다.

작품 〈F1-4-2 Simulacre(241804)〉을 보자.

이러한 두 연작은 〈Gate of Time〉, 〈Finding Flow〉, 〈Coherence〉, 〈Potter's wing〉 등 또 다른 제명의 연작들에 영향을 주고받는다.

III.

Symbolic Cosmic Echo / 16th Sooman Moon’s Woonbo Art Museum · Woonbo Culture Foundation Invitation Exhibit

Sunyoung Lee / Art Critic

On the very small round canvas, which is too small to hold the world but bigger than old things such as ceramic or a cigarette case, there is symbolic cosmos with the world compressed. Since artworks that express sounds or echoes originated from Emaile Bell are contained, the word ‘compressed renaturation’ can be appropriate. His works that has round structure integrate many things to one, but minute details are not neglected. The artist cautions himself against excessive concentration on minute details, so he sometimes makes the boundary blur. This omission might be Sooman Moon’s way of containing the infinite in the finite. This exhibit mainly features ‘Simulacre’ and ‘Fractal’ series in addition to ‘Cloud’, ‘Coherence’, ‘Bronze Mirror’ and ‘Gate of Time’. In large round canvases of over 2 meter diameter, circles are arranged in other circles, showing a cosmos in another cosmos. Small cosmoses folded and put in another large circle like magic circle sympathize with each other and amplify meanings.

Nature and relics of cultural heritages that he is mostly inspired from are exquisite, and another original source is engineering meticulousness from his initial major. The master craftsman of this era is an artist and engineer, and in the modern arts with conceptualization progressed, the production process is a major element that enables uniqueness of artworks. His new workroom located at a corner of a factory near Seoul seems proper to be the cradle of artworks that destroy the artificial boundaries that divide art, nature, and handicrafts. His works copy the world including old relics and nature, so they are ‘simulacre’, and are related to ‘fractal’ in that the methods of copying harmonize the great universe and a miniature universe. The material ‘mirror’ is related to mechanism that a certain rule or law is infinitely repeated. Sound is spreading far through the medium of air. To the artist who is passing through ‘door of time’, the linear borders that were clear in precedent works look blur. Their edges are blur like ‘clouds’.

The reason that ‘simulacre’ whose definition is ‘replica without original’(Deleuze) becomes the title of main series is that the main series came from the reference of color, texture and patterns of old relics that he prefers such as white porcelain, celadon and grayish-blue-powdered celadon. Art historians might want to trace potters who started new history by applying historical norms whose start and end are connected like a line, but they just find out that few intact relics and fractures are made by unknown potters. However, there can be forms of each era, but they are not the creature of individuals’ uniqueness either. The artist plays theme music through arrangement. The already existing forms and symbols are changed through arrangement. The new arrangement accomplishes not reproduction but creation. There seem a lot of places for the artist to interfere in most of the empty space created while patterns were moved to round canvases otherwise they might have been on the three-dimensional structure. The space will be wider and autonomy will be made out of reference objects.

Round canvases naturally embrace the process of ‘Ewige Wieder-Kunft(eternal recurrence)’ inherent in his work. The work [Simulacre(241804)] with small circles filling a big circle tells the infinity of recurrence process. Nature also recurs infinitely. Flowers that look dead bloom the next year. Butterflies recur. These plants and animals are situated between circles, and in and out of circles as entities that recur every year while participating in the great history of evolution. Of course, imaginary creatures such as dragons and phoenix are included. These imaginary creatures are not created from nothing, but are complex derived from existing animals. For example, the hog snout appearing as a pattern in his works is also the snout of a dragon. The objects that contain the nature and the process of nature during past periods remain as the aspect of religion like Buddhism(or spiritual system) that was intended to reach the order of nature. Some viewers might consider déjà vu to be bad. The artist makes the existing symbolic meanings not too prominent.

A symbol in his works is not returning to one but is having diversity. Just because a thing has appearance of ceramic, it is not necessarily limited in oriental thing. The layered structure that reminds of ‘great chain of being’, the western view of the world before modern era, also reminds us of the sacred order derived from almighty being. However, as shown in [Simulacre(231804)], his recent works remove the clear boundary. In the middle of unknown world where willow trees are growing on the cloud shaped hill and birds are flying among the trees, there is an existence like sun that might enable all the existences on earth to exist. Radiated lights look like leaves of plants. What accepts lights first on earth is the chlorophyll part. As it gets through each stage, the production and consumption of energy is possible, and through this atavicus process, the artworks hung in front of viewers are made possible. What makes the boundary blur in [Simulacre(201804)] and [Simulacre(181804)] is the cosmos that seems to have thick fog or clouds.

Normally, inaccuracy becomes accurate, but it is opposite in his works. In his works, the more he works the less accurate his artworks become. It is said that the boundary is perfect until 80% is completed. However, he makes accurate forms blur by spraying paints or applying sandpaper. While the previous celadon work is a style that sticks to perfectionism, recent work seems to let it open. It is evolution towards open structure. The artist re-searches the forms that he implanted with the inlaying technique by grinding. The parts that look hazy like a vintage style are not removed but covered. Except [Simulacre(091803)], the only work that consists of squares, the basic structure of the Simulacre series is circle. The round shape reminds of the celestial sphere due to colors similar to celadon or white porcelain. In his works, these circles are situated like numerous bubbles in different sizes and locations. However, these are not accidental but form inevitable chains. Whether lines are definite or not, the symmetrical composition is the general trend.

Arthur Lovejoy restores the previous stage of space that the modern era emptied through atheism in [The Great Chain of Being]. According to Arthur Lovejoy, the world before the modern era had a sole structure that is definite and easy to understand, and it was not only an obvious form but also the most perfect and simple form that all objects consisting of the world can have. The most representative thing is the celestial sphere, a cosmic constituent unit which stars were thought to have on their surfaces. Since Plato, circles have been considered as the symbol of completeness, and this metaphysical principle has reconciled ego and cosmos. This is the same reason that Sooman Moon’s works remind of the mandala form, which is that the world and I are unified. The aspect that things established in good order in the ‘Fractal’ series return to chaos reminds of the situation when mandala was deleted. Tibetan monks build mandala by sprinkling sand with various colors on the floor and demolish it.

For eternal recurrence to be possible, the previous world should be destroyed. The act of Tibetan monks that looks like playing with sand is edified as a cosmic act. Sooman Moon also repeats establishing and dismantling elaborate symbolic cosmos. What is needed for this change to be possible is blank. Blank might make connotative diversity possible. It might be the reason why deleted(or covered) parts are increasing. If the space where birds and butterflies fly is sky, clouds in recent works highlight process rather than structure. Clouds contain objects of various stages including the crystal in them. Sooman Moon’s elaborate symbolic cosmos is systemic, but this system will also appear and disappear. There are clear forms in [Cloud(011707)], in which butterflies are flying in the middle of space composed of multi-layers of circles, because the background is bright, but the space filled with butterflies means the space is broad enough for the butterflies to move around.

The space where fish are in [Cloud(071803)] is the same. To the artist who says ‘art is not dots but lines’, the fixed dots are swollen and become clouds. Works with clouds or that resemble clouds are harmonious but they are not the cosmos that has no movement. The butterflies and fish in the Cloud series show the circulation phenomena like clouds. The ‘Fractal’ series shows strong feelings that can’t be fixed in any forms. The ‘Fractal’ series that has mostly blue colors even though density and colors are different in the center and surroundings seems like waves, which are the combination of forms and processes. The water here spurts like a well rather than flows like a river. This spatial imagination is not flowing by time or by line but spurting. All of these are the conditions for ‘creation rather than reproduction’(Deleuze). The thick texture in the ‘Fractal’ series looks like lava erupting from crater.

He refers to this form as ‘eruption of lava, feeling of spreading’. He devised this idea from the phenomenon that when lava erupts, the center becomes empty and the center sucks other parts. Since nature never let empty space empty, movement by the difference between density and concentration occurs. The Fractal series, which is mostly 1m diameter, has very high degree of intensity of substances and energy. This means the stage of struggles for existing order to be melted and new order to be created. The stages before and after cosmos are chaos. In thinking, the adoption of time enables not only the visible reality but also the condition of the reality’s appearance and disappearance to be seen. The round looking sub appears as a process of boiling in the picture taken very closely. The Fractal series of Sooman Moon visualizes the flow of energy that will cause the change of objects. The Fractal series, which has imagination of movement but has no actual movement, says objects are the substances of solidified energy.

It is a law that penetrates all from the cosmos to machines in factories. In [Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads to Another], Philip Ball defines heat as ‘disorganized movement of atoms that conflict each other’ (Benjamin Thompson) and says it was possible to invent Carnot cycle device that circulates pistons while gases are expanded(heated) or contracted(cooled) by the flow of heat. According to Philip Ball, the field(thermodynamics) that appeared for 19th century engineers to make better engines now turns to provide the most majestic and fundamental explanation. The Fractal series of Sooman Moon shows the whole process of changes like thermodynamics. The thermodynamics penetrates all different kinds and dimensions from creatures to steam engine. Fractal is also a phenomenon that structures are repeated in different dimensions. According to the poetic expression of Philop Ball, Fractal is ‘a map made from frozen historical events’.

The work [Coherence(031707)] is related to another way of energy, the conveyance of sound. This canvas work that has the feeling of bronze is ‘spreading Emaile Bell’. In the middle of the screen is phoenix, and patterns that spread like bell sounds are arranged in a radial shape. The secret of Emaile Bell made in the 13th century is its different cross sections that create two different wavelengths, and big wavelength and small wavelength intervention each other, creating the undulation phenomenon. The echo sound is so mysterious that there have been a lot of assumptions, but the legend that the bell was made from a human who was melted was proved to be wrong. However, people kept pursuing to hear human sound from musical instruments and from instrument sound from human sound. The title ‘coherence’ is related to undulation, and it is a specific brand name of audio device which is one of major interests of the artist. This work that has no sound shows the imagery of waves.

Douglas Hofstadter defines music as ‘continuity of vibration flying in the air’ and ‘continuity of emotional reaction in the brain’ in [Godel, Escher, Bach]. However, the author says there should be vibration before emotional reaction can occur. The imagery of vibration appears not only in this work that is related to music, but in works of Sooman Moon, which are recursion. According to Douglas Hofstadter, the recursion structure is ‘the structure surrounded by network structure’. The example is a story in another story. Sooman Moon’s works of Fractal arranged in multi-layers of circles in other circles ‘will reach infinite regress by becoming cyclical’(Douglas Hofstadter). Fractal in which cyclical self-cloning is endlessly done and the process that sounds are conveyed are the same shapes. The recursion is ‘based on the fact that same things simultaneously appear on the different layers’(Douglas Hofstadter).

The book title [Godel, Escher, Bach], in which mathematician, artist and musician appear, says that the recursion found in music and art is found in atoms. According to the author, substances consisting of nuclear are protons, neutrons, neutrino, pion and quark, and everything in the world is made from billions of bubbles in bubbles in bubbles. The work [Gate of Time(041803)], in which the flower in the center is situated like the sun, and grass, fish and birds are in the middle earth, gives warm feelings due to its colors. The work [Gate of Time(051803)] paired with [Gate of Time(041803)] gives chilly feelings. While the blue lines are more removed, they seem to disappear to the other side of space-time. Margaret Wertheim says there are not only objects but also space and time were born at the moment of big bang in [The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace: A History of Space from Dante to the Internet]. This concept of space creates cosmological narration. According to [The Pearly Gates of Cyberspace: A History of Space from Dante to the Internet], while big bang created elementary particles such as protons, neutrons and electron, the elements that consist of human flesh and bone such as carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are derived from fixed stars.

In Sooman Moon’s works, all creatures including those that were born afterwards pass through ‘door of time’ as well as space. The big canvas in the shape of a concentric circle expresses the feeling of space that is expanding, and sometimes it gives the feeling of door to pass through space-time. The round shape is connected to not only space but also the imagination about holes(white hole, black hole, circle hole, etc.) that enable time travel. Time in modern cosmology is considered as a different dimension of space. Therefore, this fourth-dimensional compound is expressed as a word of space-time. A mirror-related work, which is exhibited experimentally in this exhibit, is related to the imagination about the movement of dimension. The work [Bronze Mirror Design-Front and Rear View] has the touch of the Fractal series and the patterns in ‘simulacre’ series. The half of the work is left empty. According to the artist, it is ‘a blueprint of a bronze mirror’ with two sides paralleled on one blueprint. The right side is the front side of the mirror, and the left side is the patterns in the back of the mirror.

The artist shows the back and front of the mirror at the same time, which reminds of a sort of threshold that divides this side and that side. The mirror is another door that connects here and there like holes in ‘door of time’, and this imagination appears in odd fairy tales like [Alice in the mirror land]. Thinking about the other side that is invisible is metaphysical thinking, which is infused in viewing works as symbolic cosmos. Sabine Melchior-Bonnet says the figure reflected in the mirror arouses a sense towards different immaterial world that exists over the mirror, and tells people to get over the world that rises to the surface in [History of Mirror]. According to [History of Mirror], the mirror attracts viewers’ eyes to the door through symbols and inference, and to indirect journey that proves another place that is not visible in the middle of visible things. Bonnet takes an example of Plato’s [Timaios], which displays metaphysics of light and reflected image, and says the visible world here is the feature of invisible world and that there is an idea that soul is the reflected image of the sacred.

According to Bonnet, the mirror performs the role of medium in the structure of inference and rank in the tradition of Platonism. The mirror becomes the medium of analogy in Sooman Moon’s symbolic cosmos consisting of chain networks of existence. [History of Mirror] views that the mysterious symmetry in the world of symmetry and correspondence, or paradise of Plato, makes us believe there is equivalent, better, or invisible pair behind our everyday reality. According to him, the dream to go to the other side beyond the mirror is equivalent with the desire to be born in the other side. This shines the hope to harmonize inside and outside, and the attractive hope to live a life of phantom and imagination in the world without the weight of reality and pressure of guilty. However, it is not easy to travel from this side of the mirror to the other side of the mirror. Alice that passes through the mirror doesn’t live smoothly but starts the journey of adventure. The journey from this side of the mirror to the other side of the mirror appears as a maze whose exit is hard to be found.

Sooman Moon’s works that consist of complicated lines are compared with mandala, which symbolizes maze. In the maze, which might be the road to the truth, time becomes an important variable. Old relics that Sooman Moon is inspired by have traces that time left. Lines that are gradually blurred or that are originally blurred in his works imply that there is road instead of showing that there is something at the end of the road. During the process of refining buried roads, new roads are found. In the work that has at least ten layers, roads are not only made but also found. A delicate work [Klopfen(031803)] is as elaborate as other works, but close-carved patterns are not well visible. A symbolic work, in which time-space in limited area is densely filled with roads, is mysterious, but it doesn’t have a decisive meaning like the center that is left empty implies. There is only a road that stretches endlessly. In [The Limits of Interpretation], Umberto Eco sees mystical semiosis in the fused relation that mutually combines the microcosm and the macrocosm. According to Eco, the knowledge of mystery can compare things that are above with things that are below, and vice versa.

The cosmos means that everything is different and is recognized as a tremendous glass room reflected by other things. As Michel Foucault says in [Words and Things], analogous thought is infinite. Therefore, modern science rejected analogous thought. The scientific observation is elliptical orbit, but the analogous thought that sticks to perfection sticks to elliptical orbit. However, science, which is human study, can’t escape from the analogous thought, and art is more like it. In the maze of interaction, the ultimate meaning doesn’t exist. Echo says that the mystical secret is empty secret. The world in the mystical though is covered by wire nets, but the function of communication in this sign is omitted. That’s because the sign is not transparent. The opaqueness of the sign was highlighted even when modern art rejected the reproductionism. Sooman Moon’s works that have increased parts that are erased imply the opaqueness of the sign. This is not the fixed harmony but the result of cosmos that is fluctuating. The meaning and purpose of artistic work can be ambiguous as the meaning and purpose of life are. However, modern philosophy that is represented as the late structuralism intends to say that big meaning is instilled in this situation of drift. ⓒ

A Parade of Nature and Civilization that passes The Gate of Time

Sunyoung Lee(Art critic)

Round circle that surrounds the invisible core, this way, Sooman Moon’s work has several circles in that circle, we can see movement in the static condition. The circle where the ends meet is Jeongjungdong(靜中動). Such circle structure, consistently applied to every work exhibited establishes the equal background to create difference. Power is generated in the context that coincidence is inevitability. Likewise, disorder exists in order. We may add lightness in heaviness, if we include butterfly that he paints so well. This way, Sooman Moon’s works create a dynamic stage where such conflicting values push and pull each other. There’s only center within round works,

make difference among the works. The works that infinitely return in repetition and difference pass [The gate of time] just like the title of a displayed work. His works that include a complicated work process are based on temporality, however that temporality is revealed more in the first exhibit work in 2018. That grows old together with us.

[The gate of time] series, which has the image of bronze mirror relic, implies the rear of the mirror, that is, temporality as well as a space. Mirror fixates a human being to the request of imagination, however, the point of minding the other side instead of the surface of the mirror is to distribute the self to the axis of time. Generally, relics are excavated in the historic site, and the process of corrosion is delayed since they are stored in a museum. Temporality is intervened with variables a lot. The artist, also, went through quite a few trials and errors on determination whether of stopping this process getting old. According to him, some of his works were spoiled. Even it was easier to finish neatly as previous works. That belongs to the process to open a finished process. That is to apply coincidence to an inevitable context. In this exhibition, more processes were added to imply temporality, including scratched or corroded shape, or the shapes buried or coincidentally revealed. Just as vintage jeans require more handwork than normal jeans.

Accordingly, Sooman Moon’s works secure the aspect of an object that is exquisite and atmospheric like old cultural asset. The point where the artist is attracted is not a mere modern art that cannot distinguish one’s own will and freedom. However, his works that has the simulacre attribute is in the middle of modernity. It can’t be said that there are quite a few works of the theme of simulacre, nevertheless, there are few works that are accompanied with exquisiteness to be persuasive. If a work considers the value of cultural asset, isn’t it time to make perfect things more perfect. Those works that pursued beauty completed in a moment are entering into the stage of continuity. Other circles in a circle, here, [The gate of time] with dense spokes in between, looks like the sun. That revolves around the orbit of eternal recurrence that existed before human being and will exist after human history. Such event in spatial level repeats also on the earth. The works with flowers spread in the space among the circles remind of the plants as the intuitive model of eternal recurrence on the earth. Botanists say, bare trees in the winter remind human kind of resurrection, as they rebloom in the next year, though they seem to be dead during the winter.

In Sooman Moon’s works, flowers have organic forms, however they are arranged symmetrically in pairs. That repeats inner rhythm of the nature. For him, the nature is not just the appearance but a process, and such process has a rhythm. Every life with a living heart intuitively has preference to rhythm. The artist imitated the motion of life, instead of repetition of mechanical pattern. Relation among works is also rhythmical. Just like the wheels displayed on the wall of the exhibition hall, round shapes have illusions that seem to move without actual movement. Those works with different diameters that maintain equal density and intensity form a virtual perspective on the wall of the exhibition hall. For example, small things seem far away, while big things seem close. They seem to move left and right. And between the front view and the rear view. They not only revolve on their position, also, move left and right, front and rear. As the planet revolves the stars while rotating, movement is synchronic in several dimensions. Here, space becomes temporalized.

His works have lots of layers, in this exhibition, they carve the layers of overripe time just like excavated relics. Some of them came up from the bottom, it can be expressed as the stratum of time. They do not merely disappear behind time and space. Because new flesh appears as old bark disappears. The relation among the layers up and down of the works essentially give latent motion to the painting work in acryl on the canvas. Some rise and some sink. Round shape has a sense of order, however the lines that continue while they look like being discontinued are the factors that disrupt sense of order. Straight shapes become dusts. Entropy(degree of disorder) increases. [Klopfen], which includes the meaning, a work made by beating, repeats circles in circles including 8 circles symmetrically arranged in the central layer, the outer circle, the biggest circle, operates a power to disrupt stability inside the world of circles. In work [Simulacre(041708)], such power occupies the whole.

Work [FRACTAL(081612)] feels like raging waves. Work [Simulacre(041708)] scarcely soothes the rough background surface where gold patterns rage, however nobody knows what would happen to the lines of the patterns. In the work [Simulacre(061709)], the space of a crane flying among the circles is not flat. The representative work of this exhibition, [To Father(021609)], shows that human history is not different from the nature. This exhibit work, which enhanced the sense of relic, implies that the universal human history including the theme of power or death is eventually similar to the nature. Modern romanticists perceived that the ruins for which they went crazy was the history of naturalization. Today, ultramodern technology intends to write a new history by rearranging the design of the nature. Human regulation imitates the rules of the nature. The nature does not appear as the nature itself. Nature does not appear as itself, but is mediated by culture. Art is in the climax of culture. So far, reenactment event is sometimes held in the historic site in Suwon Hwaseong.

Somewhere there’s the model—however, how the unknown potters of the previous period would work based on which ‘original’—but Sooman Moon’s works that were created by transformation little by little have the attribute of ceremony(儀禮) just like the painting of King Jeongjo’s parade. Ceremony is not a mere old custom or irrationality. The society itself has the attribute of ceremony. Ceremonial thing in the art is decoration. Modern art, ‘tradition of newness’ also, is impossible without the previous custom. Sooman Moon’s works, that enjoy amusement through variation, also have a connection to decoration. However, mechanical repetition as decoration or fixed technique is a bit different. However, perfect technique in the original decoration and ‘alluring aspect’(Jean Baudrier) accordingly are still remaining. His works, which contain huge energy both mentally and physically, cause surprise to the general audience. Ceremony repeats the initial model, however, the first one is ambiguous. Repetition without the original informs that his works have the attribute of simulacre, not the copy.

Round structure without beginning and end is considered as a proper image of simulacre. Round structure that surrounds the layer of time evades the finite composition. Disturbance of materials frequently occur in the process of imitation. ‘Simulacre that disassembles dual section of original/copy’ (Gilles Deleuze) abandons virtuality. Sooman Moon’s works are like ceramics as pictures, while they are like metals when they look like ceramics. In this exhibition, some of his works have the sense of celadon, while they are white porcelain. For example, let’s watch his butterflies that he paints so nice. His butterflies, very real even when he paints without watching the actual ones, are creepy rather than beautiful when we carefully look into them. When it becomes too delicate, it’s like a fantasy instead of reality. Maybe it can be said a fantastic illusion, since it’s not a butterfly but a picture of butterfly. Variation of material or technique is also definite. In his work [To Father(021609)], the original is a painting, however the images that the artist restored in digital are expressed in dual inlaid work. That technique is usually applied to potteries, however he made is with the bronze color paint that shines in a dark background.

The artist reproduces the metallic surface with the paint. Final texture that appears through the layered work process after being coated with gold color is revealed with metallicity. This work reproduced the parade of King Jeongjo who visited the tomb of his father, Prince Sado, who tragically died, as the original, in the structure of circles. He rearranged the spectacular structure in width and height 15meters with a circle. He intended to contain the spectacular and monumental work in the type of a bowl. If the original created by Kim Hongdo and painters is open to the left and the right since it’s linear, Sooman Moon’s work preserves the sense of huge parade which included as many as 1,800 persons and 800 military horses, while pursing the parade circularly. To make the linear structure round, intervals among the objects were adjusted. Soldiers were arranged more densely on the outer circle. Just like a telescopic view of a history. Round frame that pulls a distant space ahead zooms in time.

The artist’s interest in [King Jeongjo’s parade to Hwaseong Neunghaeng] was influenced by the monumental restoration art work [Monarchs’ parade] which the artist was deeply inspired in Dresden. The realized that such a treasure of Europe can also exist in Korea. White porcelain or celadon, some people consider them as dead tradition or stale cliché, inspire him. [Cloud] series spread the pattern of celadon on the circle. The work [Cloud(051709)] with flying cranes overlaps infinity with the sky where the birds fly. However, clear sky is not the one that puts on the layers of time. The title, cloud, began from Unbo Kim Gichang’s cigarette box, who enjoyed smoking, however an aspect was emphasized, which cannot be patterned differently from the first handicraft. Human being cannot define the movement of smoke particles or the outskirts of the cloud. The spokes of the work [Cloud(041708)], which looks like the wheels of time, are in organic lines as plants, not straight lines.

Sooman Moon’s works are antique, simultaneously, remind of chaos of modern science, complexity, and fractal theory. As the narration inherent in such theories went beyond the classical science based on strict causal theory, some part was overlapped with artistic narration that pursued diversity, which seemed to be related to the artist’s academic background as an engineer. The artist’s inborn language cannot be ignored, whatever he performs, henceforth. His ‘Cloud’ has a very stable composition in symmetry. However, stability is not eternal, but a momentary fixation. That is not a static balance in the strict geometry, but a metaphor of the balance inherent in the nature. James Klick says, in [Chaos theory; Order in disorder], the shapes treated by classical geometry are line segment, flat surface, circle, sphere, triangle, and cone, which intensively abstracted the reality and strongly inspired platonic philosophy of harmony.

Artists discovered ideal beauty from the figures, and the astronomers who insisted on geocentric theory established cosmology using them. However, it was revealed that the figures were abstracted in a wrong way to understand that complexity. Science determined the importance of oval, instead of geometrically perfect circle, and the earth was not the center of the universe, nor flat. However, Sooman Moon evaluated the idea, ‘the earth is flat’, is pure in some way. James Klick said, new geometry reflects rough and tough universe, which is not round and smooth. That is the geometry that has lots of holes, in hollows, cut, twisted, and mutually entangled. Geometry in Sooman Moon’s ‘Clouds’ belongs to tough geometry that such theory implies. We distinguish cumulocirrus from cirrus clouds, however the cloud is not fixed for a moment. The image of cloud or fog often appeared during the dynamic period. Imagine William Turner’s pictures which drove Michel Serna Gille Deleuze, who extremely refused all fixed and static things.

If the sky of Sooman Moon’s work is a space, the clouds or the birds (or insects) floating there imply time, instead of space. The philosopher Deleuze views time from chaos. Deleuze defines chaos, in his [What is philosophy], as infinite speed of every shape that faintly rises and soon scatters every direction, not disorder or nothing(無). According to Deleuze, chaos includes every available particle, which appears without consistency, instructions, and result, then soon disappears. That means a gap as the potential state that draws every possible shape. Sooman Moon, also, intends to draw reality from potentiality. His round works wait for the moment of open, continuing revolution as a dial of a treasure house that contains the secret of nature or art. The speed is slower than technical innovation of information revolution era, but never stops.

[Simulacre] series has a method to be applied both to art and science. The work [Simulacre](071709)], full of linear patterns, models borderless nature. Various borders that compose the work [Simulacre](061709)] become faint from the outside. Sooman Moon’s works are physically hard, however the implication of them is fluid. That is the image of hot liquid or gas, not a cold and solid matter. Linear order is rapidly changed by the energy. Energy drives linear order into chaos. The sky and the cloud swirl. How would time flow in such space? Scientific philosopher, Michel Serr, distinguished his theory of chaos from the classical linear theory in his [Explanation]. Michel Serr, who emphasizes that time flows complexly, which is complicated and unexpected, points out that the weather and time originate from the same word ‘temps’. Just like the warm current, Sooman Moon’s big and fluid whirl shows small whirls therein. The same in fractal series.

Sooman Moon’s works, where static harmony and dynamic continuity are combined, have a system, however they are not stiffly structured. His system is systematic only in respect that ‘Every system is bound energy’ (Michel Serr). Due to such fineness, the work [Simulacre](081709], which looks like a firm shield, has dynamics the whirls of vines between the area of large circle (great universe) and small circle (micro cosmos) like whirls that we do not know the beginning and the end. Also, it reminds of ‘complexly entangles relationship in human life dimension and network world’, according to the artist’s words. Michel Serr says, in [Hermes], a whirl is rhythmic and directivity simultaneously. According to him, the whirl that runs away revolving in circle becomes a metaphor of a situation. Serr says, nothing is formed without this essential whirl, and anything cannot exist in reality without this. Time comes in such chaos. However, chaos in Sooman Moon’s work has an invisible pattern.

The artist posted a point-blank title, ‘fractal’ onto this series, just like ‘Simulacre’. The work [FRACTAL(081612)], where dynamic power that rushes to the center from the edge is revealed to the rough surface, reminds of the sea which continues changeable movement of the surface with burning lava from deep inside or inexhaustible energy. That came from the rough surface(bark of Maehwa) of a bowl. Tradition becomes a source of infinite inspiration for the artist, along with the nature, here, variation of dimensions occurs when the artist creates the pattern of pottery, which he refers to, into a painting. A blank space is made as three-dimensional substance goes to flat, he follows the natural rule in the way of filling the space. ‘Fractal’, a Latin word meaning ‘broken state’ is the inner principle of the work that expresses the appearance that breaks up passing the gate of time. In [Klopfen] series, meaning ‘made by beating’, also, the space that repeats scales and the circles in circle repeat similarity. Fractal shape, regularity in irregularity latently lies in the cigarette smoke, cloud, and warm current.

Philip Bole said, in [The society from the viewpoint of physics – events that continue in the critical mass], the reason why the phenomenon of endless repetition where the structure in big scale becomes smaller scales, that is, fractal, drew attention of physicians during the early 1980s is because such patterns were similar to the organic shape of the nature. Leaves repeat the branches of a tree. Because the branches fill the allowed space with very high efficiency. Fractal level is the mathematics that expresses the efficiency to fill the space. According to Philip Bole, the representative characteristic of fractal is similarity of shape or form, nevertheless magnification is different. James Glick said, in [Chaos theory; order in disorder], research on irregular pattern of the nature and infinitely complex shape has an intellectual cross point, which is self-similarity. Sooman Moon’s works, which have self-similarity(類似), or self-likeness(相似), the substance that fills a circle or circle in circle is this fractal curve.

Sooman Moon’s work, has such complex and organizational structure hidden therein, as the fractal theory implies. Fractal, which implies self-similarity, is symmetrical. Of course, symmetry that James Glick pays attention to is, symmetry between large scale and small scale, not left and right or up and down. Sooman Moon’s works also have difference among the scales. For example, the world of circles in circle in work [cloud(051709)]. Same in the relation among the works. The cloud also is fractal like the arrangement in the tree or mountain chain, and snowflakes. All these shapes are ‘materialization of dynamics in physical form’, which ‘means return, that is, the pattern in pattern’ (James Glick). Above all, they show ‘a paradoxical result, an infinite road in a finite space’ (James Glick). That’s the aim of the art—‘Art intends to create limitedness that restores limitlessness’(Deleuze)--. Also, that is the aim of religion that human beings with limited life long for limitlessness.

The ambiguous dimension in Sooman Moon’s works also has a common ground with fractal theory. Yoshimasa Yoshinaka takes examples in [Science and philosophy, two mirrors], such as ‘the coastline of the rias coast in the natural world, the shape of trees, winding river, and straightly continued mountain’ that Mandelbrodt paid attention in 1975. The writer says, the fractal dimension of the landscape of the mountains on earth is about 2.1. That is above flat surface, however below three dimensional level. In other words, that’s above two-dimension below three-dimension. There’s such ambiguous dimension also in Sooman Moon’s works. He paints three-dimension like pottery into ‘painting’, and he creates them precisely, however they are not flat as picture. The thickness of his works is thick, which is treated formatively, and some works begin from the edge. The frame of his works is not transparent. There’s material opacity. System is disrupted by energy, and the energy forms another system. In Sooman Moon’s works, which fill the space with diverged time just like fractal figures, ‘gate of time’ is not only one. Here, time that includes history flows long with ‘complex diversity’(Michel Serr). ⓒ

The Place of Existence for Creation

Sunyoung Lee (art critic)

It is a fundamental narrative of the modern era that universal division of labor increased both productivity and isolation of humans. Some proposed an alternative in the form of revolution or reform, but the dualistic nature of progress or development is an ongoing paradox that is still affecting us. The only way to overcome the fragmented reality as a result of extreme division of labor in our daily lives is through leisure. However, consumption to fill one’s leisure supports isolated labor. Can art propose an alternative to this vicious cycle, or to those who are dismissed even by the vicious cycle? Unlike divided labor, art is a holistic activity that requires not only one’s imagination but also the dream, subconscious, and every drop of sweat. Although art can be a pain to some, it can also be a source of joy to others. Art as a holistic activity causes ‘Finding Flow,’ which was a theme for the recent solo exhibition of Moon, Sooman in Daegu.

After spending his 30s as a successful venture entrepreneur, he became an artist in his 40s, and, for that reason, he must have stronger faith in art and rely on it more than anyone else. However, the Korean art scene does not share his vision, although he seems likely to continue his work regardless of such ‘objective’ vision. The art scene, in which multiple biennales are held each year, only reflects fragmented works in a fragmented way and, as a result, fail to convey the messages of art as a whole. The pictures of artworks printed on monthly magazines do not reveal the essence of the artworks and there are only limited explanations. They are simply filled with unfinished paintings and articles. Products that were created within their own fields cannot be fully enjoyed. And such fragmentalism continues, probably because of the power behind it. Unfortunately, it is reckless for artists to pour everything into their works as it is becoming more and more obvious that power is what you need in order to make mediocre works stand out. Everywhere you go, they only talk about money and connection.

If, in a fashion show, you see only grotesque clothes that nobody would be able to understand, you will need to question the power that enables these clothes to be put on the stage, even if nobody will buy or wear them, rather than simply blaming the incomprehensible nature of fashion. Thanks to those who arbitrarily display biased information, art is becoming more and more exclusive. Moon, Sooman’s works, regardless of their scales, show highly concentrated density and strength in style, and it seems to be part of the artist’s strategy as someone who is far from the power that supports absurdity. Each of his round paintings is complete on their own, and this enables his works to travel around the world without any ‘hidden’ power behind them or even the artist himself. His upcoming solo exhibition ‘陶工の翼(Poter’s wing)’, which is to be held at Gallery Kitanozaka (北野坂) in Kobe, Japan, in October, shows his works in which different elements were placed according to his own rules.

With delicate elements such as flowers, butterfly, and even void and cracks placed by using exterior materials that are generally applied to ships, his paintings are paradoxical in that, to open them, you need to close them. Only the perfect can be ‘together.’ Different pieces of his paintings share a similar image according to the series, as if they were cut off the same stem. While a stem is diachronic, a section is synchronic. A section in a stem satisfies both self-sufficiency and continuity. They have the past and the future and also enjoys the fulfilled present. They exist and disappear at the same time. This method enables containing the whole in parts, rather than leaving the parts as separate entities. The audience can restructure continuity from such discontinuity. In one painting, you see a flower fully blossoming, in another, you just see a butterfly, and, in others, you see just void and cracks. The plate-like round canvas contains a void.

The round frame serves as a symbol suitable for conveying the sense of nothingness or infinity. It maximizes the nature of art, revealing infinity with finiteness. In the [陶工, the poter] series, the artist shows changes in stains or brightness, for the audience who may resist (or fear) blank. [Filing empty-2], which reveals a celadon void filled with cracks, reminds us of some divine act to create various shapes of topography by flicking a surface. [調香, make a perfume] series and [脈, vein], for which Moon won an award in Japan, shows the flow of force such as with fragrance and sound that dissipates from the center. When these energies become materialized, they would turn into a mountain or valley, just like in his paintings. All solid things such as mountains and valleys must have been a type of energy at one time. It is also a network of energy, like the pulse of butterfly, that is omnipresent in his other series. In Moon’s paintings, such pulse is sometimes realized in fine forms like cracks.

Fine cracks, which are affected by temperature and pressure, imply disconnection of what was once connected. The thick pulses seem disconnected in his paintings but are connected underneath. The [Finding Flow] series is comparable to mandala, as it arranges flowers on the celadon background and sometimes fill the space between the center and outer edge of the paintings with complex patterns, through which the viewers get lost and gain enlightenment. The round canvas is still but conveys movement. However, the center is as quiet as the hub of a wheel. Sometimes, like in [調香-04], a tornado is lying beneath the paintings, producing and absorbing everything. The center plays an important role in his paintings that are small yet infinite. Jean Salem, in his book Ancient Atomism, introduces the philosopher Epicurus who viewed the space as being infinite. His these that ‘there is an infinite number of worlds’ also applies to Moon’s works at the center of which lies potential movement.

According to the ancient atomism, when the cosmos was created, tornadoes of different kinds of atoms fell out of it. Atomists believed that the cosmos consists of atoms and void. The number of atoms and size of void are also infinite. To them, the cosmos is ‘overall infinite and the subsets of it, i.e., atoms and void, are also infinite’(Lucretius). In such infinite cosmos, atoms make up the world by various combinations and arrangements. The [Finding Flow] series, which contains plant shapes, show potential movements like spokes. In a painting of the [陶工の翼] series, plants are arranged like spokes. The center of a wheel does not move. This center is something that ‘moves while not moving’ (Aristotle). In this context, the butterfly, which is at the center of the [陶工の翼] series is not fixed. It is a center of the movement for ‘eternal return (Nietzsche)’ along the circumference, and this center changes gradually through repetition and difference.

Butterflies must coevolve with humans, reacting subtly to the ecosystem. The [陶工の翼] series features atavistic butterflies, which are a trademark of Moon. From the early days as an artist, he has used butterflies as an icon that shows diversity of the nature. The butterflies in his paintings maintain a consistent form and, thereby, maximize small differences. It is a way of maximizing diversity through one. When you see the butterflies, each of them placed on a single canvas, it is like the butterflies change the pattern with each flap of their wings. And this movement perhaps changes the time and space to which they belong. The flapping wings cause a subtle wavelength and sends the ‘butterfly effect’ to a time and place that is far away. The strong pulse and fine cracks shown in other paintings of his are visual representation of such wavelength. The artist simulates diversity of the nature. Although there are pictures of butterflies above his worktable on which various tools including a magnifying glass are placed, he no longer looks at butterflies or the pictures of them when painting.

The paintings of Moon Suman are precise but not representative. Representation cannot convey such diversity and amusement shown in his paintings. The fine downy hair you can observe through a magnifying glass gives a strange effect, but it is the butterflies’ wings that are at the center of the diverse look. Instead of being fixated on a particular image of butterflies, he imitates the process through which a butterfly is born and goes through metamorphosis. The brush strokes create certain waves, and, when the fine details are added, the pattern of the butterfly is crystallized. This means, coincidence plays a role in the process of painting a butterfly and a background for it. In Moon’s paintings, butterflies are more like fantasy. And that is why they are so clear. As a referent, butterflies are a key to entering into the fantasy world. The white background often found in his early works, which reminds us of collection boxes, transformed into pottery with cracks or corroded bronze. The surfaces with fine cracks or corrosion give the artificial background a natural feel.

What does not change is the shape that represents the characteristics of a butterfly and presence of a shadow, which gives the illusion that the butterfly is real. The symbol of beauty and diversity that used to bed confined in a white rectangle now settled on the color and shape of infinity. However,. Butterflies, which the artist can now paint without reference, are his alter ego that takes the central place in his paintings, representing finiteness within infinity. The colors and patterns of butterflies are also infinite. The artist shows infinity within infinity. The small size does not weaken the infinity. Moon’s works maintain consistent strength and density regardless of the size. All of the round canvases in this exhibition have a symbolic effect on their own, unlike neutral, rectangular canvases. His paintings have a sound within silence, like movement within stillness. Both the square canvases in his early days and the more recent round ones are perhaps like the CD he once made for ‘fun’ as a music aficionado.

His handmade CD, which you can imagine seeing in a record store, is a product of simulation without reference, just like his paintings. Both the round and square canvases were used only for unique cases as an icon, rather as a general frame, throughout the history of art. Music discs turn time into space and material while providing mesmerizing experience to music lovers. Round and square frames have symmetrical stability and represent perfection. In the history of art or alchemy, we often see circles encasing a square or symbols representing a perfect human being. Our desire for perfection may be attributed to various sources, such as religion and technology, but, fundamentally, it is related to aesthetic experience. Even dictators were immersed in such aesthetic experience. It provokes the desire for material possession and, that is why, CDs are still available even when digital music became the norm.

In Moon’s paintings, the round disks and square frames that contain the disks symbolize the perfect time and space that spurs qualitative leap of the time and space that is otherwise meaningless. The images on a circle or square create unique synesthetic experience based on image and music. The round frame is a multi-layered symbol of the sky, spirit, and ego. While the butterfly is the artist’s alter ego, it represents another ego within his ego. It pursues perfection, like idea. Siobhan Roberts suggested, in the book [King of Infinite Space], which centers around the life of a geometrician, Plato is the successor of Pythagoras who believed that all things are generated from numbers. Plato, who said ‘God always applies the principles of geometry,’ noted circle, sphere, square, and cube as ideal geometrical forms. They were believed to exist on a higher level of the world, apart from the physical reality.

The circle and square frames in Moon’s paintings represent logical rigor and absolute purity. The butterflies combine imitation and original idea, and the images carved on the ceramic or bronze ware and the round frame surrounding them are all symbolic. Ernst Cassirer, in [Concept symbol format in the structure of the humanities], suggested we are not surrounded by the nature, but, rather, that we are living in the cultural world constructed by our perception and this cultural world is a system of various symbolic forms consisting of certain rules of creation. When we view Moon’s paintings based on the concept of symbols defined by Cassirer, sensual objects, including both the nature (butterfly, sky) and the artificial (ceramic ware, bronze ware) obtain spiritual and universal nature and the spiritual advances toward the sensual world through symbols. It is the symbols that bridge the nature, which has been destroyed in the modern era, and art. In Moon’s paintings, technology is also included in this bridge.

However, regardless of his past history, Moon is now a painter who paints with oil or acrylic paints on a canvas. Artists deal with infinity in different ways than philosophers or scientists do. The philosophers Deleuze and Guattari, in their book ‘What is Philosophy?,’ argued art is also reasoning process like philosophy and science, but through emotion and perception. According to them, between science and philosophy and art are networks woven with infinite correspondences. Each concept is at the center of vibration, in their relationship to other concepts. For that reason, the whole resonates, rather than occurring in a series or being consistent with one another, just like Moon who attempts to create resonance through visible/invisible pulses and the cracks he makes on the canvas surface. Deleuze and Guattari viewed the uniqueness of art lies in restoring infinity through finiteness. Art has different methods than philosophy or science. According to these philosophers, philosophy attempts to save infinity by applying consistency to infinity. And science, by contrast, gives up on infinity in order to obtain instructional relationships.

However, art attempts to create finiteness that restores infinity. In Moon’s paintings, we find the ‘composition that returns infinity’ conceptualize by Deleuze and Guattari, as shown in the surface of the round canvas and butterfly and the relationship network of various patterns that are arranged in strange ways. In his paintings, space is dense with different patterns and subtle stains, but the void (negative space) is essential. It places distance from the possibility of turning the artwork into a finite formal system under the name of perfection. Here, movement takes place not only between visually similar frames and icons, but also between multi-layered symbols. The symbols are not fixed but fluid and resonant. And it is typified by the concept and shape of ‘pulse.’ The pulse unfolds on the ego and the sky, that is, the round canvas. Here, the clear symbol is the idea of correspondence between the microcosm and macrocosm.

Correspondence is not a chaos of categories but an alternative reasoning of humans who became distant from the nature. At this time when the position of humans became more unsettled than ever, we need to look toward the analogical reasoning. It is also often found in mythology and in Eastern philosophy. In Moon’s paintings, correspondence unfolds through reasoning on infinity. Quoting Cusanus, Cassirer sets two forms of relative infinity that opposes the god, in ‘The Individual and the Cosmos in Renaissance Philosophy.’ One is revealed through the cosmos and the other in human mind. In the former, infinity is realized by the fact that the space expands endlessly without spacial limits. Moon’s round canvases in which actual or potential concentric circles are found show correspondence between microcosm and macrocosm like in The Individual and the Cosmos in Renaissance Philosophy.

According to this book, during Renaissance, humans were thought to both surround and be surrounded by the cosmos and ego by the world. In a time of incomplete fragments, holistic thinking is necessary more than anything else. Science and technology that improves productivity through extreme division of labor, which is the most predominant means of domination, diminishes humans. They are irrelevant to humanism, in both positive and negative ways. To be sure, the hierarchical cosmos of Renaissance is only possible on a symbolic level in this time, after the scientific revolution. And the symbolic cosmos emphasizes creation as much as existence. According to The Individual and the Cosmos in Renaissance Philosophy, there are two distinctive narrative means, i.e., one for the field of existence and the other for creation. According to Cassirer, strict knowledge exists only in relation to the permanent, i.e., things that are always identical to themselves and eternally consistent.

On the other hand, the things that are limited in time and change in different moments cannot be grasped by knowledge. Moon’s paintings, which leave a large negative space to accept changes, promote not only a place of existence but also creation. The round canvas contains blue sky and changeable reality. Jean Salem, in Acient Atomism, introduced atomists who argued movement would be impossible if everything is full. According to him, atomists believed, without void, there is no movement and that the void is the cause of movement. Here, creation does not mean making something out of nothing but forming something from debris of the previous world. The simulation of particles that are created and disappear in Moon’s paintings emphasizes creation. And the simulated creation is in contrast to representation and production. His works take the Korean or Eastern background and form, but are at the meeting point between Eastern and Western philosophy in that they surround the ego with the nature. ⓒ

Events happening at the edges of the surface

Seon-young Lee (Art Critic)

The round canvases that are bigger than the average adult height let people have the enjoyment of ‘Finding Flow (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)’ that the artist also feels when immersed in his work. Immersion involves falling deeply into something beyond emotionless confronting. It must be a step of the qualitative change that allows the division between one’s subject and object to be disappeared, which can be defined as the best gift as an artistic result. The achievement is only possible through deep concentration. Religion or psychoactive drugs can also allow the same effect but there is distinction that a newly created sensible object becomes a medium in art. In the immersive artwork, there are whole processes unlike fragmented labors, art unlike everyday culture, Jouissance unlike pleasure and infection unlike superficial communication. The stronger the density, the bigger the infectivity. Also, limitation of given time and space can be overcome. Soo-man Moon’s painting fundamentally accomplishes it in scale but his small works also bring out the similar effect from their density.

Although the small paintings can be captured at a glance, details let audience stay longer in front of them. If one puts one’s emotion on the butterfly, often appearing in the artist’s paintings in actual size, round or rectangular surfaces would be approached more extensively. The accomplishment is also felt in the big works from the early stage of the processes. One can think that the artist’s big painting as a celadon or white porcelain plate when seeing from a photo but it is actually an extension of a small plate into the height of a person while maintaining the density of patterns rather than just an extension. In the result, his paintings go beyond decorative feelings of ceramics. As one of the charming elements of ceramics comes in front, a new esthetic level is opened. Sometimes the blue sky and the flying crane on ceramics spread beyond the limitation of ceramics on surfaces. They are also illusions and imaginations but their scale offers a new experience.

The primal reason that they can offer a new experience is on the maintenance of the reference’s density on the works and the technique of extension during the process. Immersive artworks generally puts importance on overall installation rather than a specific target but in Moon’s case, the artist focuses on individual pieces. In other words, immersive artworks that aim for theatrical effects call visibility following all other senses while Moon folds all of them into his works as seen in the painting Combining Smells (調香). Of course, his individual paintings gather in an exhibition space and bring effects together but each of them is also immersive, which tells how they allow one to have esthetic experiences from each painting while having an objective distance and to fall into the different world. In the artist’s paintings, offering a psychological trip that aimlessly wanders within encountered objects, the dichotomy that conflicts a final result and process is collapsed.

In the artist’s studio, sixteen round canvases from the diameter of 36.5cm to 210cm are piled as a kind of a set. It seems like a Russian matryoshka doll, a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another. This way not only allows easy transportation and storage but also expresses the view of the world that there are spaces inside a space. Macrocosm and microcosm here are in the corresponding relation and reflect each other while forming infinite affiliation. However, until his process is opened, audiences are hard to believe that the artist’s paintings are done on canvases because round or oval forms remind surfaces of objects such as celadon, white porcelain and metal crafts. As a result, his exhibition often confronts a helpless situation from audiences who see and try to touch and tap the paintings. How his paintings enable the scale that ceramics or metal crafts cannot realize locates the artist’s works in a vague place, which is neither a craft nor painting.

Although the artist’s references are national treasures such as Cheongja Sanggam Unhangmun Maebyeong (celadon vase with inlaid crane and cloud design) of the Koryo Dynasty and the results are elegant as well, Moon’s painting come as a strange object that cannot be easily defined as what general contemporary art does. This ambiguity has driven contemporary art to a corner but also become its identity at the same time. In Moon’s paintings, the paradox that involves the ending of contradicting matters to one point seems to be presented in round canvases that rotates around. The ceramic references are three-dimensional but how the artist spreads this into a two-dimensional form creates a change. New patterns are sometimes added when various painted or carved patterns on ceramics are rearranged in order to fit in a round shape of a canvas. The artist creates forms that are needed between connections of images and they exist as they have always been. Also, as seen in the work With Mother that referred to the Korean artist in the 18th century Hong-do Kim’s painting, Hwaseong Haenggung Hangchado (procession to a temporary palace), some variations involving that wide spaces are cut or narrow spaces are extended are done.

The artist has help from a computer for this complicated re-editing process. Since he has majored in the design of a machine in the department of mechanical engineering before studying art, art and science naturally blend together to the artist. He is not repulsed by machines, which can come to an artist who falls only in art. There are diverse tools such as reading glasses to represent small images and cutting machine for a sheet to detailedly represent rearranged images during the process along with canvases and paints in his studio. His technical capability will be greatly beneficial to his future work that attempts to extend into three-dimensions beyond two-dimensions. It has been possible to change a three-dimensional object into a two dimensional object from the inlaying technique. The process of more than sixty layers of paints from the background to the patterns and the final varnish cover makes the surface of his paintings not like painting but porcelain. Covering layers of paints again and again reveals lines created from exquisite patterns to small cracks as one layer.

The new paintings for the exhibition, held at Suseong Artpia in Daegu, do not only contain celadon as a reference but also present the inlaying technique with a feel of bronze. There are some paintings without a butterfly that always sits on the surface of celadon and paintings having no patterns but cracks like white porcelain. The paintings like white porcelain that have no specific things to look at seem to have pushed all the images out of frames of round canvases. The very fine cracks spreading like a spider web on them have not relied on coincidences such as timing like in the ordinary way but surprisingly appear from the artist’s intention. After the artist’s sincere experiments on materials and conditions, cracks are unrestrictedly split into wide, narrow and double cracks. The artist makes paints minutely permeate the gaps between those cracks and sharpen them, which finally becomes a sort of ‘inlaid cracks’. The cracks that look like fine patterns are neither individually painted nor neglected.

The paintings with inlaid cracks instead of representations remind the paintings of empty canvases, followed at the end of Modernism. The paintings have the surface of celadon mark with the representation of their delicate colors that determine celadon as a masterpiece. From the ‘dark blue color seen in a cabbage leaf that pops from the cold weather during the kimchi-making season’ to the ‘milky bluish green with green’, the variation of a blue color that the artist expresses or puts in his mind is infinite. According to him, the color of celadon has all the colors like red, black, blue and etc. but just ratio is different. A crane and dragon fly on the color that he delicately created. A butterfly joins in some paintings. A butterfly has represented in his early paintings as a trick. It was painted on a rectangle canvas and this canvas became a collection box, which implies that individual butterflies were carefully collected, spread with pins so that patterns on wings can be easily seen, and titled with scientific names each in a white box of a canvas. Shadows were even depicted as well.

Soo-man Moon’s early paintings tell that the technique of representing relies on the process of understanding, dominating and possessing. However, the artist in the recent paintings erases the pins that hold butterflies and lets them fly on the celadon-like surface. Butterflies are not just there to be represented anymore to the artist who had overcome a high-risk surgery. Butterflies are also the main agent to Soo-man Moon. As he even signs his name on a wing of a butterfly, a butterfly represents his alter ego. In order to depict a butterfly detailedly, the artist has to stay at one place and keep one position. Butterflies flying on the celadon-like surface now dream to be freer than the physical condition but the change is only a background and the density is kept same. Butterflies are in their actual size unlike other images and stay one by one on each canvas. They are not there to be shown but wings to fly are emphasized and even drops shadows. The background and butterflies are same illusions but they are different dimensions of illusions coexisting together.

Insects, painted with flowers in the Western still life painting, refer to an allegory of the transience of life but butterflies flying in the oriental background remind Chuang-tzu’s Butterfly Dream. The artist becomes a butterfly and enjoys the skill of the potters who created celadon and white porcelain. Audiences can also become butterflies and look around the paintings. A butterfly that metamorphoses into several states and grows as a final being with beautiful patterns realizes the difference and repetition of how modernism’s principle is not newness for newness but opens potentials inherent in its seed one by one. It had been a rule that the culture and art before modernism carried out according to the law of nature. Butterflies fly on the surface symbolizing infiniteness beyond a rectangular frame that is also a collection box, and look over. His bronze-inlaid-paintings, titled as Coherence, Finding Flow and etc., have the surface of bronze that is carved with symmetrical patterns.

The feeling of the old objects is there with bluish rust and blackish spots like rusty bronze ware and as it goes to the edge, the surface becomes rougher. The other group of paintings is the series having the surface of celadon without a butterfly. This Combining Smells (調香) series reminding a pupil of eyes as if it embodies the universe is delicately created like a perfumer makes perfume, and attempts to correspond to other senses. The gradation, getting darker as it goes to the edge, gives volume like ‘circle lens’ does. The paintings, having a butterfly on the celadon-like surface and titled as Poter’s Wing, are the series containing not only the exquisite butterfly, appeared in the early paintings, but also the moth from the Korean traditional painting of grass and insects in the background of the celadon-like surface as a sky. If his early paintings found a microcosm in the exquisite recreation of a butterfly, the butterfly, blended with the round surface of celadon, would mean the universe in the universe. However, whether it is a butterfly or the artist, the form is so perfect that it may seem vain. Thus, the artist sometimes leaves ‘humane qualities’ in his paintings.

There are also rectangular canvases that the four corners are trimmed to be round like a smartphone along with round canvases in the exhibition. The representations of images referring to the Korean traditional painting of grass and insects by Shin Sa-im-dang and the painting of Hangchado (procession to a palace) by Hong-do Kim are rearranged for the composition in the round and rectangular canvases. Also, the big painting, connected by ten rectangular panels, is included but still the round canvases are the one that gives a unique feeling in his exhibition. The circular shape is added into the rectangular paintings or the rectangular frames are transformed into the circular shape and this roundness creates the more cohesive and self-sufficient microcosm than the rectangular frames do. As also seen in the painting Combining Smells (調香), the round form reminds the expanding universe after the first explosion or the eyes looking at that universe. A. Yaffee in his book Symbolism in the Visual Arts tells that a circle is comparable with the allegory of the spirit (Plato) from the fact that a circle symbolizes the wholeness of a spirit of every aspect. A circularly continuing line of a circle is finite and infinite, and static and dynamic at the same time. As a result, a circle, embracing this double-sidedness, has been symbolizing perfectness across the ages and in all countries of the world.

The boundary of a circle sometimes divides the world into two parts, a sacred place and a not sacred place, and becomes a model of constructing an ego, home, temple, fort, city and etc. Images relating to this circle appear behind a saint as halo or in a mandala in religion. Soo-man Moon’s frequently used round canvas is another symbol containing the other meaningful symbol. It is realized in the earthly life but it is a way of art that constructs the alternative world by defeating the boundary within it. Art is a sacred base that one can play as much as one wants within it, unlike other fields. Sacredness drags while pushing, becomes helpful while falling one into danger and even gives eternal life. Mircea Eliade in his book Traité d' histoire des religions explains his concept of the sacredness in a circular space. According to him, this space attempts to repeat the primal sense of the saint who consecrated the space by isolating from the surrounding earthly spaces. Since the center of the universe has been projected in the center of a circle, the artist’s paintings are the repetition of the creation of the world and the reproduction of the universe at the same time.

Eliade explains that the realization of a circle is an endless desire of a human being and nostalgia over a sacred space or a transcendental place appearing as a paradise. It must be a man’s will that always wants to live in the center of the world, the reality and sacredness, in other words, a will that wants to regain a god’s condition beyond a man’s through a natural method. Eliade also explains about the outside and the inside through the dichotomy of sacredness and mundaneness in his book Images et symboles. According to him, uncharted or unformed territory starts when going beyond this closed world with boundaries. There are a space like the universe on one side and uncharted territory on the other side with unfamiliar existences like a devil, lemurs and the angel of death out of this familiar space. The destruction of established order, the extinction of the original image, is regression to the confusion, the original state before the occurrence of the universe. Eliade says that all the human beings ultimately aim for the overall reality, the center that gives sacredness to them and the center of them even if it may happen in the unconscious state.

Therefore, the desire to be in the center of the world where the communication with the celestial world is possible in the middle of all the existences is deeply rooted in a man’s heart. This desire explains the reasons that the center of the world is excessively used. The nostalgia of a paradise always means the desire to be in the center of the world, the middle of all the reality without difficulties. Eliade sees that the first purpose of this shamanistic will comes from the wall standing between two different spaces. Meanwhile, although the circular form of Soo-man Moon has the traditional symbol of a circle, there is a difference that it heads to the outside rather than the center while giving rough forms as it goes to the edge. This must look the outside beyond the pleasure of the scared space in the center. This open attitude allows the artist who uses the traditional medium for his practice to break the abstruseness of symbolism. The symbolism has one center and this center disturbs the free play as the modern debaters of deconstruction have insisted.

First, the round canvas appears as an ideal medium to realize a complete model for the center. And although Soo-man Moon effectively expresses the symbol of a circle that can be also considered as an eye or ego, he does hold on to it. This is because the symbolism does not also go beyond the idea of ‘representationalism’ when it becomes the center. Not only phenomena but also ideas are represented. This ‘representationalism’ is locked in the dichotomy of a subject and object. Also, the “expression”, marking when appearing as a subject rather than an object, is not that different. There are elements of creation and transformation as much as representation in Soo-man Moon’s paintings and the artist seems to develop elements of creation and transformation more in the future practice. Even though the references of his paintings are the national treasures that have a great amount of information, they go through diverse stages in the process of transformation. The realization of the appearance of ceramics in the unrealistic size, the active editing of a space and the creation of connection for differences of dimensions, the arrangement of images, and the foreground of the images that sits on the background such as cracks are a few examples that Soo-man Moon shows.

When defining his painting as a symbolic practice, it is not only a connection of the sensible and spiritual matters, in other words, a medium to fix the outside objects but also a symbol that becomes a medium to see the outside world through that connection as Ernst Cassirer says in his book Begriff der symbolischen Formim Aufbau der Geisteswissenschaften. In that sense, art is symbolic as language, myth, technology and science do. Let’s think about the meanings of the artist’s various images, created from the references of the inlaid celadon, as an example. There may be mythical narratives by the archeologists, historians or art historians who read art more with objective eyes in those images but a creator does specifically exist in myths. Also, ceramists who created the universe into symbolic objects in the history are left anonymous. Jacques Derrida says that the most interesting part in the research of the anthropologist Levi-Straussian comes in on the declared renunciation of all kinds of reference in the context of one center, one subject, one privileged reference, one origin or the absolute source in his book L'Ecriture et la différence.

Thus, there is no unification or absolute source of myths. The cradle and source of myths cannot be captured and realized all the time. Derrida emphasizes that the discussion about the structure of myths that does not put importance on the center can neither have an absolute subject nor center itself. The unification of myths is just tendentious and projective. According to Derrida, the unification of myths is just an imaginative phenomenon, occurred from the effort to interpret. The absence of the center here means absence of the subject, in other words, the artist. In Derrida’s point of view, we cannot define the center and completely generalize because a sign, standing for the center, is added as an extra. After all, the center is empty. When the center is disbanded, the idea that it is a reflection of a round form becomes disappeared. Then, the artist must have been so sincere to his references that are argued as the originals in order not to reflect but to transform. It is like equality is based in order to determine differences.

Soo-man Moon’s paintings that subtly change in every exhibition are still in the process of evolution. He visualizes symmetry on each painting like in a mandala but his main efforts are concentrated not on the center but also around the edge or on the surface. Gradation is used to strength the density of the edge in some paintings. The artist sees the roughness on the edge unlike the center as a ceramic’s level. He compares this part with the part of the Japanese warrior’s sword in which the natural cut is left like gushed lava. It seems to deliver its wavelength not only to the edge of his canvas but also the outside. Moreover, it asks this question beyond detailed depiction. Can the essence of a matter be seen through externals? The paintings on canvases depict the surface of ceramics but there is a distinction in a quality. As clearly seen in the work’s side and back, the artist rather focuses on the surrounding and the surface than the center. The binary idea of ‘essence and appearance or an original form and reproduction (Gilles Deleuze)’ is converged as one dimension.

This kind of a dimension allows to be immersed. Soo-man Moon’s practice ultimately heads to simulacra rather than reproduction. What Gilles Deleuze emphasizes in his book The Simulacrum and Ancient Philosophy is simulacra instead of reproduction. According to him, simulacra are not dilapidated reproduction but embody the positive energy that denies an original and duplication, and an original form and reproduction. Deleuze also explains the nature of simulacra that eat all the beginning by citing Blanchot’s words about ‘the universe where images cease to be the secondary existence compared to a model, a deceit claims truth and an original form does not exist anymore or the universe where the eternal glimmering only exists after the original absences are dispersed in a cycle of going back and coming back’. Although simulacra bring the universal collapse by eating all the beginning, it is not a negative disaster but a positive event. In this context, Soo-man Moon’s painting is not reproduction of the work, assumed as the original. It is like the engineering technology of science (what his major was before studying art) reflects a new existence based on ‘simulacra, in other words, the technique of reproduction without any original (Donna Haraway)’.

The dichotomy that divides the past and present, the east and the west, an original and reproduction, and etc. becomes one existence like a Mobius strip. Deleuze suggests Fortunatus’s pocket, looking like a Mobius strip, as an example in his book Logique du sens. This pocket was made with several roughly sewed towels so the inside and the outside were connected as one. Thus, this pocket was like embodying the universe. The inside becomes the outside and the outside becomes the inside. This changeover is always achieved by extending the edge so we become to follow the other side of the edge from the power of a Mobius strip. The continuity of the inside and outside substitutes all the levels. The rough edges that even seem to be rolling unlike the quiet center in Soo-man Moon’s paintings point out the time and space in which the events of changing the structure of the edge happen. The artist also considers the side space of the surface as a surface and attempts to bring the outer energy into the center. In this edges of round canvases, the understandings of ‘the ideas that rises against the surface and declines the wrong layers, and how everything begins from the edges (Deleuze)’ are realized. ⓒ

‘Expression of free will through immersion’

KIm, Sung_Ho, Art Critic

Prologue

Painter Sooman Moon's private exhibition makes you see his formative world at a glance as he shows his recent and past representative works together. A 〈Cloud〉 series, his recent work, is an abstract painting which multiplied and arranged a lot of grains of rice in concentric circular form. The work was from relic images from the results of several formative experiments of Korean backgrounds including celadon to place butterfly or bird-shaped pictures of flowers, his early works. In other words, a 〈Simulacre〉 series which makes third-dimensional shapes of Korean relics including celadon and earthenware the flatness of two dimensions was changed to a 〈Fractal〉 series to search for the texture of relics and then a series of 〈Cloud〉 which maximizes the round images that they claim to advocate to be the method to stack them as images of small grains of rice got to appear. What are uniform formative awareness and aesthetics that these serieses which look different from one another continue?

I. Laying three-dimensional structures on the flat - A <Simulacre> Series

Painters have had language of representation which creates illusion to paint scenes, persons, and three-dimensional things on the flat for a long time. The three-dimensional existence has been reproduced perfectly on two dimensions through trompe-l’œil that objects are painted their normal size in a very realistic way. Therefore, simulacre's attribute which sticks to status of fakes which are more realistic than the genuine articles after the thee dimensional existence is copied to be 'an illusion of images' is fundamentally the flat.

Then, what is a method of representation shown in the 〈Simulacre〉 series by Painter Sooman Moon? That is "an attempt to put Vollplastik in a screen like a planar figure to be spread on the flat" as the painter mentioned. He makes things like pottery the flatness with a developed projection like a map projection to cover a sphere (球體) like the earth with a cylindrical or conical shape, assume that a point of sight is the center of the earth, and project and indicate the lines of longitude and latitude onto the flat. Therefore, ancient relics become visible to be anamorphosis on the flat being spread as the circular images like shields in his work. As maps are the anamorphic indices that the earth were set in flat coordinates, his 〈Simulacre〉 series become the anamorphic indices that external images of relics were spread in the circular flat to make you see it at a glance.

In that sense, his work twists and embraces Simulacre's philosophical concept of 'fakes which are more realistic than the genuine articles'. That is very closely connected with an issue of points of sight (視點). In other words, simulacre that illusions of representation claims to advocate is essentially 'magical fiction made by perspective at a particular point of sight,' while Sooman Moon's 〈Simulacre〉 series becomes 'friction realized with a method out of perspective (脫) through an imaginary point of sight made in the center of things.' In other words, general formative simulacre builds three-dimensional structures on the flat by perspective, while, Sooman Moon's 〈Simulacre〉 series lays them on the flat through the method out of perspective.'

His 〈Simulacre〉 series which was changed from three dimension to two dimensions is recognized as the works that patterns were drawn on circular shields. Here, ceramic patterns are localized to be the same size without any distance being laid flat on the flat. Let's look at his work, 〈F1-4-2 Simulacre(241804)〉. Various patterns are radially spread in several concentric circles with the central axis as the center in radial shape. They can be found that his 〈Simulacre〉 series just has the central axis and does not have any main characters and patterned patterns are just maldistributed. In other words, all the patterns and images become a new index which were democratically reorganized in the situation that they do not have the relation between master (主) and servant (終).

II. Material's self-similarity - 〈Fractal〉 series

A 〈Fractal〉 series, Painter Sooman Moon's another work, is differentiated from others in that it takes over images like repetitive patterns from the 〈Simulacre〉 series and maximizes matterness.

These two serieses affect and are done by another ones including 〈Gate of Time〉, 〈Finding Flow〉, 〈Coherence〉, and 〈Potter's wing〉. These works share Simulacre's attributes of 'the flatness of flat circles' found from the 〈Simulacre〉 series and partially have a relief's attribute of matiere. The relief's matiere is effectively revealed through visual attributes of vague or clear pattern images that various patterns are repetitively produced as well as physical ones of matterness made as media meet colors. This aspect of democratical maldistribution of the patterns without any relation between master and servant is more specifically revealed in his work, 〈F1-1-0 Simulacre(191804)〉. It's because plant patterns harmonize with the relief's matiere together with geometrical ones. The 〈Fractal〉series deserves to be a follow-up to the 〈Simulacre〉 series at this level.

By the way, what is Fractal? This means a so-called shape made up of parts that are the same shape as itself. 'When a whole is split into parts, the whole shape is included in each part, which is a geometrical shape.' Or it is 'the small structure which is constantly repeated in a similar form with the whole shape.' Here, the part has attributes of 'self-similarity' and 'recursiveness.' The former is generally found from figures with high self-similarity that mathematical rules are applied. And the latter is generally done from natural objects with low 'self-similarity' and attributes of 'recursiveness' such as brocoli, bracken, sunflowers, shells, and beehives. Especially, fractal images found from natural objects are revealed while order and disorder cross. It's because original nature is based on randomness and complexity.

These two attributes and types overlap each other in Sooman Moon's 〈Fractal〉 series. It's because plant patterns which are organic like fractal shapes featuring repetition and multiplication or arabesque patterns (唐草紋), but symmetrical are used together. Furthermore, the relief's matiere which looks asymmetrical also creates symmetrical images in general as it is radically 'spread/returned' towards the outside/inside of concentric circles. His 〈Fractal〉 series is work to twist and expand the limited meaning of fractals limited to 'self-similarity of images' by adding 'self-similarity of matterness' and 'natural randomness and complexity' to it at that level.

In addition, a 〈Gate of Time〉 series which affected and were done by the 〈Simulacre〉 series and the 〈Fractal〉 series expands the space concept into time in that images of traditional relics bring the past to the present and this place. Sooman Moon's work features images, material, time, and space which are in harmony.

III. Democratical maldistribution of modules which circulate boundaries - <Cloud> series

Paintings have been regarded as space art without question during the modern period with sculpture and architecture under Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's analysis. Time in paintings were then studied at the iconographical level to include historical narratives or give temporal symbols. We do not does not restrict paintings as space art in the art scene of the present time that everything claims to advocate decategrization. Paintings which give practical real movement through ways to add kinetic objets or maximize virtual movement through devices to create optical effects or methods to mix them with videos already intersect with the realm of temporal art.

Sooman Moon's paintings, especially his 〈Cloud〉 series drives temporality by providing illusions and creating their virtual movement through the screen made by a lot of small modules (images of grains of rice) accumulated in the paintings. But, temporality through the optical effects is not essence in his series. He is immersed in the concept of circulating temporality in the creative process of continuing slow and hard labor by making grains of rice modules and the multiple images, the outcome. He arranges the process to accumulate the modules called 'small grains of rice' as if he practices asceticism in the process to take modules out of a cloud folder and build parts to be a whole and mediate silently in hard labor by putting himself in creative temporality which is slowly connected.

By the way, why is grains of rice? He found a material of 'rice' in the process to investigate Goguryeo, history, and relics in an extension of the 〈Simulacre〉 series and the 〈Fractal〉 series and got to be interested in its formative language and meanings. When he was immersed in changing three-dimensional patterns of relics to the flatness of two dimensions, he got to begin a new 〈Cloud〉 series that patterns are replaced by images of grains of rice.

Rice is long food which has led human existence and the Korean people's staple food! It's a profound and mysterious shape which is a long and asymmetric oval and has an embryo bud similar with itself on one side! The shape itself of the grain of rice used as a module in Sooman Moon's 〈Cloud〉 series formatively takes over his 〈Fractal〉 series which showed symmetric fractals or plant patterns like asymmetric arabesque patterns together.

Interestingly, his creative process is very complicate in general, but his visualization method is comparatively simple. It's his own unique formative method settled after various formative experiments. For his new work, images of grains of rice which had been saved in a digital archive after separating them from the previous 〈Cloud〉 series were brought from a cloud folder and went through several simulation processes to arrange them in parallel in various ways by utilizing a computer graphic program. After that, ideas and rough sketches of new works are done on the computer, images of 'multiple-grains of rice' designed on the computer were moved to a mechanical device, the sheets punched as they were were attached to a canvas, and paints were applied at once. The creative method of 'Sand-mandala' in Tibetan Buddhism to make each image as a process of meditation and asceticism was systemized by a digital method and was changed to use instant brush strokes. But they are not different to the spirit of mandala paintings to aim at meditation and asceticism. He reapplies or wipes paints to change uniform concentric circles of the monotone and uses several punched sheets numerous times for a work by composing complicate colors on the whole from the start.

There is one thing to think of here. In his 〈Cloud〉 series which looks simple at first glance, but actually went through the complicated process, the images of grains of rice used as the module always appear as the images of the similar size with actual rice on small or large canvases, and even the multiple large canvases connected like three-fold altarpieces. They extend to the outside from the center of the concentric circle, while the identical grain size of rice is kept and 'democratical maldistribution' of the module which circulates boundaries continues. In a way, they can be a message of democratic communication like 'justice, equality, and everybody.' That actively reveals the message with the structure of running all directions (四通八達) that a shape of 米, the Chinese character of rice, has. As a result, this moves towards the deep message created by the painter's formative experiments to reveal internal/external nature of rice without distortion and now, a world view of 'circulation.'

Epilogue – Free will expressed by immersion

'The world view of circulation' that Painter Sooman Moon's 〈Cloud〉 series aims at meets F. W. Nietzsche's world view of Ewige Wieder-Kunft, his philosophical metaphor, as he told you in person. The world view says that "endless time forms a circular shape (圓形), all the things are infinitely repeated as they are in it, and the discovery of awareness like that is also infinitely done." This concept of Nietzsche seems to explain Sooman Moon's formative world in the 〈Cloud〉 series. As Nietzsche's sole existence is nature as the entire creation and the only principle of life is a will to power, 'the will to power' in life continues to return to nature which wants more power. Nietzsche requests Amor Fati that you have to love your real life filled with birth, old age, sickness, and death without conditions and live every moment faithfully. This can be evaluated as 'Dionysian Yes' as his only positive reason to overcome 'his nihilistic reason' which accounts for his whole philosophy.

In this sense, Let's check Sooman Moon's notes.: "They say time flies. The older you get, the faster speed of life is like air resistance which is proportional to the square root of the speed in hydromechanics. There are more accidents in hardship and the crosswind which is against your body nips pretty harder." These words of the painters who are more than 50 years old make you get a sense of the difficult realities in his life that he chose art instead of a religion.

But, Painter Sooman Moon created his works keeping Amor Fati in mind today through his choice as an artist and Dionysian Yes about it as Nietzsche requested it through Ewige Wieder-Kunft. That interlocks with his view of work to try to enjoy freedom through immersion in art. You need to remember that nature of Sooman Moon's work which seems to be filled with images at first glance is 'a space left by a free will in immersion' and at the same time, a glimpse of introspection on life at this level.

“The main theme of my several series is ‘expression of a will to be free through immersion.’ Immersion makes me dominate canvases with unlimited imagination. (...) Screens are filled with patterns like machine parts which mesh and turn. But taking a close look, you can find that spaces are more important than individuals. In other words, it means that freedom must exist in order and there are still rules in it. Expression of order, rules, spaces, and freedom reflects the paitner's ideas of life.”
